A researcher’s perspective on parental leave

In a new episode of the Meet Sandvik podcast, Dr. Richard Petts, professor of sociology at Ball State University and an expert in parental leave policies, joins to discuss the new global parental leave benefit of Sandvik. The new global parental leave benefit of Sandvik offers 14 weeks of 90% paid leave to all eligible full-time and part-time employees, regardless of gender or location. Dr. Petts emphasizes that this gender-neutral approach is crucial for promoting gender equality and ensuring that both parents can share caregiving responsibilities. “Including fathers in these policies helps break down traditional gender norms and creates more equal co-parenting dynamics,” he explains.

Building a supportive workplace culture

Dr. Petts also highlights the importance of building a supportive workplace culture where employees feel encouraged to take parental leave. “It’s not enough to just have a policy,” he says. “Managers need to model parental leave-taking and actively support employees to use their full leave.”
