Make your career move at Sandvik

Maybe a job in finance appeals to you after a lengthy career in sales – or perhaps you want to try working in a different business area? Sandvik makes it possible by offering opportunities to learn, take on a new role, or even change career.
In today’s competitive market, certain job skills are in high demand. Sandvik believes in nurturing its employees and goes to great lengths to retain talent. This includes offering job flexibility and the ability to rotate jobs within the company.
“Sandvik is an exciting high-tech company with lots of opportunities and diverse roles in our three different business areas and our Group functions,” says Eva Wikmark Walin, Vice President and Group Head of Employee Experience. “We are at the forefront when it comes to electrification and automation in mining, and we invest heavily in R&D. We work with a wide range of customers in mining, general engineering, automotive, aerospace, medical and other fields.”
Global job mobility for career growth
With a presence in more than 150 countries, Sandvik has plenty of job opportunities worldwide, and an open job market policy meaning that all positions are visible and accessible to anyone.
Encouraging internal mobility and training has significant benefits for both the company and the individual. It is a way for Sandvik to keep its talent engaged by providing them with a chance to grow and enrich their experience within the company. Exploring cross-functional job positions broadens the company’s talent pool which is also crucial in an increasingly competitive market.
Over time, personal interests can change, and an employee might, for example, want to move from a career in finance to trying out sales. Or it could be the right time to try living in another country. Sandvik employees don’t have to change companies to test this out as Sandvik offers global job mobility in addition to internal mobility.
Supporting career developement with lateral moves
“We are very open to moving people around,” says Wikmark Walin, adding that it complements a belief in continuous learning.
In addition to moving upwards, everyone should dare to look at a sideways move too. We believe that the broader the knowledge you have, the more you can contribute. We have loads of opportunities for the right people, where we both re-skill and up-skill our employees.
At Sandvik, it is the employees themselves who plan their career paths with support from their manager. Development talks with managers and mentors and making individual development plans are pivotal for exploring career paths and driving professional growth.
“I’ve always had leaders at Sandvik who inspired, helped and supported me – people who empowered me to take the leap,” says Rita Cardoso, who currently works in Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions’ HR department.
A career change across borders
After seven years in marketing and communications at Sandvik in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Cardoso not only changed her department function and career, but moved to another country too. Today, the Brazilian is working in Stockholm, Sweden as a Global Talent Attraction Expert.
“Personally, and professionally, it has been great to have this opportunity in the company I have already worked for, that believed in my potential. I feel like I am learning, enriching my professional life and continuing to contribute with the skills I bring from another discipline,” says Cardoso.
Remaining open to different prospects is important she adds. “Sometimes, the skills you have are exactly what a completely different area is needing. That was my case. It was a career change and new for me and it’s very exciting.”
Both Cardoso and Wikmark Walin highlight the nonhierarchical Sandvik culture. “We are really just looking at how we can co-create and help each other. Sandvik has a very collaborative, inclusive culture,” says Wikmark Walin. “And, we have a very exciting journey ahead. My advice to employees and potential employees is to stay curious and interested and continue learning whenever you can.”
