Thesis project – Solar energy in industrial environments

The world needs minerals for the clean energy transition, and at Sandvik Rock Tools we take part in driving the biggest technology shift in the industry by our advanced engineering. We offer a complete range of rock tools for surface and underground mining, and for construction. With market-leading equipment, expert knowledge in the field, as well as years of research, experience, and customer feedback to back us up, we constantly push forward to ensure safe, sustainable, and efficient solutions for our customers, and for the planet.

Background and scope of the project
We want to be a positive force in shaping the industries of the future, using our skills to solve the big challenges of our time. Leading the way with innovation and engineering for the world we need, Sandvik has committed to set targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), consistent with the Paris Climate Agreement of keeping global warming below 1.5° C. This thesis will give you an opportunity to be part of the industry transition to renewable energy sources but also use your skills to help solving the challenges we face in the day-to-day work.

Today we use 100% green electricity at our production site in Sandviken and constantly strive to reduce the consumption. However, as climate is changing towards longer periods with extreme temperatures, the need for indoor climate cooling increases. The project will investigate if solar panels can be a renewable energy source at the site given the roof topology, infrastructure, and dust emissions from the steel mill slag deposit.
