Bachelor’s Thesis: Improving revision management process and systems

Are you a motivated Bachelor of Engineering student? Are you looking for a thesis subject? We may have one just for you at Sandvik's Tampere production unit! We have an open position for you to write a thesis on revision management process and systems. Succeeding in this task will leave you with a finished thesis, us with a more efficient process, and our customers with a better experience.

Background and environment

Sandvik is a global, high-tech engineering group providing solutions that enhance productivity, profitability and sustainability for the manufacturing, mining and infrastructure industries. We are at the forefront of digitalization and focus on optimizing our customers’ processes. Our world-leading offering includes equipment, tools, services and digital solutions for machining, mining, rock excavation and rock processing. In 2023 the Group had approximately 41,000 employees and revenues of about 127 billion SEK in about 170 countries.

The thesis will be done for Sandvik’s Tampere production unit where we deliver advanced drill rigs for both underground and surface applications. The drill rigs are assembled from a large number of components and subassemblies manufactured by suppliers. Even though underground and surface drill rigs are assembled by separate organizations, these organizations share some common functions, such as the logistics system.

Recent developments in our logistics system have made it possible to further enhance the management of material revisions. The revision management process begins with product development designing a new revision for an item, and the latest drawings are then shared with our suppliers. After evaluating the implementation constraints (e.g., using old stock as is, modifying, scrapping), the procurement specialist and supplier agree on the first purchase order with the new revision. Then the process continues by warehousing and assembling processes and concludes with customers receiving products. Tracking revisions throughout the entire supply chain is crucial for successful customer experience.

Your mission

In your thesis, we expect you to plan further improvements to our revision management process. Your mission is twofold. First, you should describe the desired target state of the revision management. Second, we expect you to build the roadmap defining the next steps needed to customize our systems and improve our revision management.

To meet these objects, you need to gain a good understanding of how item revisions flow in our systems and identify the areas for improvement. In practice, the project involves gathering and clarifying the needs and requirements of various stakeholders regarding the revision management system, benchmarking how different ERP systems support revision management, and identifying potential enhancements for our systems. The process involves several systems, but your improvement work focuses mostly on ERP.

Your profile

We are looking for someone finishing up their Bachelor of Engineering studies in mechanical engineering, logistics engineering, or similar. You should have:

- Work experience from manufacturing environment

- Prior knowledge / experience on ERP systems

- A healthy amount of motivation

The results should include the written report (either in English or in Finnish) required for your degree and a presentation for Sandvik.

Why write your thesis for us?

A compensation will be paid for the thesis after completion and presentation. In addition to this, you will get the tools you need to succeed in your work. We will provide you with a workstation, a laptop, and other necessities. The thesis work will not be done in Sandvik’s employment, but as external work.

We will support you in your thesis work. You will join our Operational Excellence team, who will help you get started. Although the thesis is yours, guidance and steering will be available along the way, too.
