The role

The EHS Specialist oversees the safety of the day-to-day operations of the Production Unit in the Rotary Drill Division in Alachua. Host the monthly EHS meetings, coordinate, and play an active role in safety audits.

Areas of responsibility

  • Provide a clear vision of the requirements, initiatives, actions and outcomes for the Alachua site to meet or exceed the required EHS standards. Ensure these activities are captured within yearly site EHS objectives and action plans, and they are supported by the required training and measurement tools.
  • Provide recommendations for the improvement of EHS practices, business processes, operational practices, and workplace design through the review and assessment of incident reporting, incident investigations, injuries, and workers' compensation outcomes and by applying knowledge of legislative change or improvement in best practices.
  • Maintain and improve the environmental and safety management systems (ISO 14001 & ISO 45001).
  • Manage Worker's Compensation cases, including maintaining the OSHA 300 log.
  • Maintain legal compliance with all applicable OSHA, EPA, FLDEP and DOT regulations, including completion of all required reporting.
  • Manage legal compliance and handle multiple hazardous materials, including paints, solvents, lubricants, aerosols, and various non-hazardous wastes. Conduct inspections of hazardous material and waste storage areas. Sign and file hazardous waste manifests and track hazardous waste generation. Serve as an Emergency Coordinator as specified in the site Emergency Contingency Plan.
  • Perform all necessary internal audits and inspections.
  • Drive the implementation and education of the Sandvik Mining EHS Strategic management plan.
  • Lead the investigation of accidents and injuries and manage the documentation.
  • Source and implement programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques for chemicals, wastes, equipment, and other materials.
  • Recommend measures to reduce or eliminate industrial accidents and health hazards.
  • Inspect facilities for existing or potential hazards, determine appropriate corrective measures, and ensure effective implementation to prevent accidents and minimize liability to Sandvik.
  • Planned and implemented EHS policies and procedures in compliance with relevant legislation and corporate requirements.
  • Implement environmental policies and procedures in compliance with relevant legislation and corporate requirements.

  • Responsibility to identify and report any unsafe work habits. Ensure all hazardous materials are handled properly and in accordance with regulations.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years professional-related work experience, including previous experience.
  • ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 internal auditor certification preferred
  • 3+ years of familiarity with and exposure to safety & environmental management systems within a manufacturing organization.

Education

A bachelor’s degree is preferred, ideally in science, environmental and/or safety discipline. Also, individuals with working experience in an EHS role or dealing with EHS in a production environment. Exposure to EHS management systems within a manufacturing organization will be considered a plus.
